When my husband and step-son were away during this past hunting season, I had occasion to take the dog out and in the course of putting her on her lead she seemed to “freak out” and was whining and clamoring to get under the deck (the lead is close to the deck so she can actually get her whole body under it but can’t go too far). I wasn’t sure what was up with her behavior, we typically have rabbits under the deck and she likes to chase them out but I had NEVER seen her react like this!
She finally calmed down a bit even though there was still a little barking/whining in the general direction of the deck so I stood out there trying to figure out what had caused this reaction. Well ……… it didn’t take me long, out from under the other end of the deck came a porcupine!! I have seen them cross the road both under the circumstances when they had made it as well as when they hadn’t, but I had never seen one “up close and personal” or at least as up close as I was willing to get ….. yuck!!
Now I consider myself pretty capable when the boys are away and had gone outside with the intent of shoveling the snow off the walk-way and deck (which I had done) and then filling the wood box in the house but I was proven not to be as tough as I had originally thought by one little (ok, it wasn’t really very little) woodland creature who proceeded to leave the deck and go directly to the wood pile. Yes, I admit, I went back in the house and waited what I thought was a good amount of time (about 2 hours) for the little critter to do what he had to do and then vacate the area before I went back to my task of gathering wood.
When Dick came home from hunting I had told him about the encounter and he said that was NOT a good thing to have around, particularly under the deck where he could do some major damage. I proceeded to show him where the offender had gone (in the direction of our neighbor’s house) after our meeting and we haven’t seen a sign of him since…… until this past Saturday ….
Early in the afternoon Dick went to let the dog out (I know, makes you think that maybe potty training might be in order) and came immediately back in the door with the dog and yelling something about “he’s back”. I followed him back out onto the deck and sure enough, here was our little visitor perched halfway up a tree directly across from the deck and he just held on, lifted his head, looked at us and chose to stay where he was…. probably not his wisest move ……
Perhaps at some point I have mentioned that my husband is a hunter, maybe I have even expressed that he is a very good shot, either way, we no longer seem to have an issue with porcupines under our deck.
Alright, according to my last blog I signed off “See you in September” and here it is …. the month of September and as promised … here I am!! It actually is good to be back but it has been a wonderful ride being gone as well.
The wedding was a great time had by all (if I do say so myself) so I guess all of the planning was well worth it. We were joined by so many family and friends starting on Friday the 24th for the rehearsal and then were blessed with a beautiful day on the 25th for the wedding and even more of the people who mean the most to us were there for all of the festivities.
Thank you to everyone who has sent Dick and I well wishes and blessings before, during and even after that day and I have had quite a few people asking for pictures so I don’t have all of them yet but thought I would post a few for those who are interested…. enjoy :)
May 1st was my last posting and not that I am not prone to long stretches of neglect on my blog page – this I believe equals one of my greatest pauses to date! I apologize for that but I do know that in my many travels over the summer from one location to another both Mike Wolf and myself have run into many of you who have expressed the understanding of our lack of time – it has been a CRAZY summer for us all! That of course comes as very good news for those of us who are year-round residents and particularly business owners but my goodness, I am ready for a NAP!!
Well, for me that “nap” is just around the corner, 8 days from today will be my last day at work before my wedding (which is now just 11 short days away) and then we will be taking some time off but I will be back on September 10th and until then I am asking all of you to take good care of my very good friend Mike Wolf. He will be having to wake up early to cover things for me and probably working late most days as he single-handedly runs everything.
He is one of the amazingly special people that we have sharing in our day and I don’t know if it is the fact that it is so close but I seem to be “reflecting” more and more each day. I feel so blessed to have the outstanding individuals we refer to as family and friends in our lives. I think a lot of times when planning an “event” like a wedding we tend to get caught up in the minor details (I have been quite guilty of that) and granted there are some details that need to be tended to with a sense of urgency (marriage license, officiant, future spouse, etc) but the rest is just a byproduct of the celebration and I believe I am finally moving into that frame of mind and it has only been with the help of so many who are handling all of those “minor details” for me. Each one of you knows who you are and all I can say is THANK YOU ….. for letting me vent, for finding me solutions, for refocusing my attention, for a hand on my shoulder, a hug when needed, an evening out for a drink with friends, for a kind word at the perfect moment and for so many other things that have gotten me here with my sanity in place (or at least no further out of place than it was previously) …… THANK YOU!!
This will probably be my last blog until after we get back from the honeymoon but by then I will have TONS to tell you! I will try to send pictures to Mike while we are gone and he may even throw a few up on our website for those who might be interested. In the meantime, to all my listeners, thank you for the well wishes and believe it or not, I really will miss being here while I’m gone. Stay safe and I’ll “See You In September” … lol!
The following blog contains a wedding update – if you are not interested in this particular topic – do not read further!
***** WARNING***** WARNING***** WARNING*****
The question I get asked most often these days from just about anyone has to do with our wedding plans and “how they are going”. It makes perfect sense particularly since we are only a couple of short months away, and it is always so sweet to hear that people are truly interested so I thought I would just give you an update to this point and just like any other wedding, we are ALREADY having our share of ups and downs with the plans.
At this point we have our guest list done, invitations are designed and ordered, we have everything set with the place where the wedding and reception will be taking place, wedding rings are purchased, all of the bridesmaids chose and ordered their dresses (and at least 2 of them are already here and ready to try on and have altered as needed), tuxes are chosen, my dress is being altered (and as an extra “up” part of this, it fits! – just taking care of the bustle and a few minor “fitting” issues), groomsmen and bridesmaids gifts are purchased, flowers and decorations are decided, cake is being taken care of …. all of this is on the “up” part of the list which is GOOD!
Now for the “downs” and thankfully there are only a couple! I am trying to get another copy of my birth certificate, for whatever reason I can’t find it and have to have it in order to get our marriage license. I assume that I am far enough out to get it in time since we can’t get the license until 30 days before the wedding but since I have to deal with a state and a different state than Wisconsin, I am just hoping there isn’t too much red tape. The only other issue we have run into is our band for the wedding, we just found out at the end of last week that unfortunately they have double booked the date and are now not available to play at our wedding, not good but not somehow became slightly worse when the two possible DJ’s we were trying to book called me this Sunday to tell me they were also unavailable so there is a little “stressarella” factor beginning but we are looking into back-up plans so on that front, please wish us luck.
We also have the entire honeymoon planned, we have our driving route chosen along with stops along the way, the flight back is booked, hotels are booked, the rental car is booked and we even have some activities already booked and paid for!
All in all things are going very well, I am getting more nervous as we get closer not having EVERYTHING completed because I know summers are so busy around here for us but bottom line is …… the day is coming and it is after all just one day, we will be ready, everyone will have a great time and no matter what happens at the end of it all I will be married to the most wonderful man in the world that I will be able to spend the rest of my days with!
Well, tomorrow is a big day!! We go and get our wedding invitations designed and ordered so that they will get out in the mail next month which is very big for me because it will keep things on trackand keep me from stressing out as we approach the BIG DAY. Also, anyone who hasn't yet booked their rooms will have a friendly reminder before they are unable to get a room.
Also, I am meeting with the seamstress who will be doing my alterations on my dress. We are just planning on getting the bustle ready to be done but since I haven't tried the dress on since I bought it I am a little nervous. I have been faithfully working out at the gym and watching what I eat and I have dropped a few pounds so I should be fine, if not ............... I did happen to catch a segment on the news about brides-to-be who have feeding tubes inserted to lose weight before their BIG DAY....... hmmmm ......... wish me luck!
P.S. - I am totally joking about the feeding tube thing just so you know. I really did see the segment and apparently it really is a new "wedding fad" but NOT my thing!
